A position description for the role of

Minister of Music

Position to begin in September 2023

The position of Minister of Music at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church is a part-time position, with hours primarily on Sunday mornings as well as availability for all scheduled worship services, choir rehearsals, and staff meetings. The position is, first and foremost, a position of Christian ministry and leadership. The Minister will work in conjunction with the Rector to plan and order the worship of God and to encourage a culture of musicianship and ministry with the parishioners of the congregation.

St. Stephen’s is accustomed to organ and piano accompaniment on Sunday mornings, with most hymns sourced from The Hymnal 1982. Additionally, the congregation is gifted with many talented musicians (mostly guitarists and pianists) who enjoy offering their playing at occasional services. We have had a volunteer choir in recent years, though the combination of the COVID-19 pandemic and leadership transitions has led the group to dwindle. The Minister of Music will be tasked with restarting the parish choir and taking the lead in exploring how to best utilize the musical gifts of parishioners in worship.

Applicants must have multiple years of experience playing the organ in Christian worship as well as leading a choral program, with experience in the Episcopal Church being preferable. Those applying must be willing to work in a collaborative environment and demonstrate the ability to maintain a professional, welcoming, and inclusive environment through interactions with staff, parishioners, and visitors.

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter to the Very Rev. Dennis J. Reid at dennis@ststephensboise.org.
